Lloyd Harbor, a village in the town of Huntington, has a population of under 4,000. In 1654, three English settlers from Oyster Bay bought 3,000 acres from the Matinecock Native Americans. The land back then was called Caumsett, meaning “place by sharp rock.” Two decades later, it was renamed Horse Neck because of the amount of horses grazing in the area. in 1676, Boston merchant James Lloyd and his son Henry took over the land, acquiring its current name of Lloyd Harbor. By the 1900’s wealthy families began to buy land and build mansions. Famous residents, such as Charles Lindbergh, Jerry Seinfeld, and Billy Joel have lived in the village. Current day, many of the mansions built are now being modified for other uses. Marshal Field’s estate, for example, is now Caumsett State Historic Park, and thee Conklin estate is now a Roman Catholic Seminary. Other manors have since become a county park or a wildlife shelter.
